For years, marketers have been taught to think in a straight line.
Awareness → Consideration → Conversion.
A customer sees your advert, becomes interested, visits your page, considers the product, and eventually buys.
Simple.
Except… customers don’t behave that way anymore.
Today, someone can discover a brand on TikTok, search for reviews on Instagram, ask ChatGPT whether the product is worth buying, watch three creator reviews on YouTube, slide into the brand’s DM, and complete the purchase through WhatsApp all within the same afternoon.
So, is the traditional digital marketing funnel dead?
Not exactly. But it has definitely changed.
Technology has made the customer journey less like a funnel and more
like a web of different touchpoints. Social media is now a search engine. AI is becoming a research assistant. Creators are becoming trusted product guides. Messaging platforms are becoming storefronts. And algorithms are constantly deciding what customers see next.
This means brands can no longer assume that every customer will discover them at the “awareness” stage and patiently move down the funnel.
A customer might discover your brand after watching a review. Another might encounter your product through an AI recommendation. Someone else might see a friend’s post, search your brand immediately, and buy within minutes.
The journey is no longer predictable.
And that changes what good digital marketing looks like.
Instead of asking, “How do we move customers down the funnel?”, marketers need to ask:
“How do we make our brand valuable at every point where the customer might encounter us?”
That means creating searchable content, building social proof, producing useful content, optimising customer experiences, investing in creators, using data intelligently, and making it ridiculously easy for interested customers to take the next step.
The funnel isn’t necessarily dead.
It’s just no longer the only map.
The brands that understand this shift won’t simply chase attention. They’ll build digital ecosystems where discovery, trust, conversation and conversion can happen almost anywhere.
Because in today’s digital world, the customer doesn’t follow your funnel.
Your brand has to follow the customer.
