Are influencers still influential?

The influencer marketing space has always thrived on one thing: attention. But in 2025, attention looks very different than it did five years ago. The influencer marketing game isn’t dead, it’s just shapeshifting.

The early years of influencer marketing were dominated by mega influencers, celebrities and creators with millions of followers who could make a product “sell out” overnight. But as social media matured, audiences became savvier. They noticed the polished #ad posts, the repetitive brand deals, and the lack of genuine connection. Engagement rates plummeted, and brands began looking for something smaller, but stronger: micro influencers.

These creators, often with 10K–50K followers, have niche audiences that trust them deeply. They may not reach everyone, but the people they do reach are far more likely to take action. The ROI for brands shifted from “reach at all costs” to “convert with trust.”

Now we’re in the midst of another shift, AI is changing how we influence, not why it works. AI generated influencers like Lil Miquela and virtual brand ambassadors are gaining traction. They don’t age, get tired, or spark scandals. They’re available 24/7, speak any language, and can be perfectly molded to fit a brand’s aesthetic.

But here’s the catch: while AI influencers can deliver flawless visuals and instant content, they also risk missing the human element that drives real connection. Consumers still crave authenticity, they buy from sources they trust, in spaces where they already hang out, through content that feels native. and while AI can simulate relatability, it can’t truly live it.

The Real Measure of Influence

So, are influencers still influential? Absolutely!, but the definition has evolved. It’s no longer about follower counts or flawless feeds. Influence in 2025 is built on:

  • Trust: Audiences want recommendations from voices they believe.
  • Relevance: The message must feel personal and timely.
  • Adaptability: Being able to evolve with platforms, tech, and consumer behavior.

The future isn’t “human vs. AI”, it’s human + AI. The most powerful campaigns will combine the emotional pull of real creators with the scalability and creative possibilities of AI technology.

The real question isn’t if influencers matter, but: Who or what do people trust now?
And your brand’s success depends on answering that before your competitors do.
