YOUR ADS AREN’T THE PROBLEM, BEFORE YOU SPEND ANOTHER NAIRA ON ADVERTS READ THIS

Advertising doesn’t fix weak strategy. It amplifies whatever is already there.

You can have a brilliant product, beautiful branding, an active social media page and a ready-to-spend budget and still waste money on advertising.

Why?

Because visibility is not the same as growth.

Before you put your next naira behind a campaign, ask a more important question than “How much should we spend?”

Ask: “What exactly are we trying to achieve?”

Are you looking for sales, qualified leads, enquiries, awareness, website traffic or WhatsApp conversations?

Without a clear destination, advertising becomes expensive movement without meaningful progress.

Start With the Customer, Not the Campaign

Your customer is not interested in hearing how impressive your company is.

They are interested in what your business can do for them.

They care about their problem, their budget, their convenience, their urgency and the outcome they want.

So instead of saying:

“We are a leading provider of innovative solutions…”

Ask:

“What is keeping my customer awake, and how can we make it easier?”

The strongest marketing messages don’t simply describe a product. They make the customer recognise themselves in the story.

Your Offer Can Make or Break Your Ad

A beautiful advert cannot rescue an unattractive offer.

Great visuals may earn attention, but the offer has to give people a reason to act.

Ask yourself:

Why this product? Why this brand? Why now?

Maybe your advantage is speed. Maybe it’s convenience, expertise, quality, accessibility or a genuinely better solution.

Your advert earns attention. Your offer earns action.

Stop Trying to Reach Everyone

“Everyone is our target audience” usually means the audience hasn’t been defined properly.

Your best customer may have a specific need, profession, location, lifestyle, purchasing behaviour or level of urgency.

The clearer your audience, the sharper your message becomes.

And when the message is sharper, your advertising becomes more efficient.

Choose Platforms Based on Behaviour

Don’t advertise somewhere simply because everyone else is there.

Ask where your customer actually makes decisions.

Someone searching Google for a service already has intent. Someone discovering a brand on Instagram may still be exploring. Someone watching TikTok may not even realise they have the problem yet.

Audience + Objective + Offer + Customer Journey = Better Platform Decisions.

What Happens After the Click?

This is where many campaigns quietly lose money.

The advert works.

The customer clicks.

Then the website is confusing. The WhatsApp line doesn’t respond. The product is difficult to find. The checkout takes too long.

That’s not an advertising problem.

That’s a customer experience problem.

Marketing is a chain:

Attention → Interest → Action → Experience → Conversion

If one link breaks, your results suffer.

Don’t Chase Likes. Chase Learning.

Your first campaign doesn’t have to be perfect.

It has to be measurable.

Test different hooks, audiences, creatives, offers and calls-to-action. Then let the data tell you what deserves more investment.

Don’t ask only:

“How many people saw it?”

Ask:

“What did they do next?”

Clicks, enquiries, purchases, qualified leads and repeat customers tell a more meaningful story than impressions alone.

Before You Spend, Ask These Seven Questions

1. What business result do I want?
2. Who exactly am I targeting?
3. What problem am I solving?
4. Why should they choose me?
5. Where are they most likely to respond?
6. What happens after they click?
7. What metric will determine success?

If you can’t answer these clearly, you may not need a bigger advertising budget.

You may need a better strategy.

Because more money doesn’t automatically create better results.

It simply gives your strategy more volume.

The brands that win aren’t always the ones spending the most.

They’re the ones that understand their customer deeply enough to say the right thing, to the right person, at the right time and measure what happens next.

Before you advertise, build the strategy.

Then let your money work with purpose.
